Torture Techniques
Here are some of the most documented and reported methods of torture used by SAVAK, according to survivors, human rights reports, and historical research:
Burning with cotton swabs and alcohol: soaking cotton in alcohol and inserting or wrapping it to the given body part and setting it on fire.
Burning with lighters and candle wax
Deep Fry: placing body parts in boiling oil
Gas Stove: bruning prisoners backs and legs
“Red-Hot Cage” Torture: A small metal cage—about 80 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm—was heated from below by a large burner. Prisoners were forced naked through the narrow opening, the door was locked, and the entire cage was brought to scorching temperatures. With no room to move, every part of the prisoner’s body pressed against the red-hot bars, causing full-body burns
Hanging heavy weights from the testicles
Needles: inserting long needles into the body, inserting needles under the nail and then pressing it against the wall
Forced Standing: Prisoners were compelled to stand in one position for hours or days, leading to physical exhaustion.
rape
inserting a broken bottle into the anus
boiling water pumped into the rectum
Solitary Confinement: Individuals were isolated in small, dark cells, sometimes for months, to break their spirit.
Psychological Abuse: Threats against family members, verbal abuse, and other tactics were used to mentally torment detainees. Mock executions, including blindfolding and gunshots fired near the head. Threats to rape or kill family members. Prolonged solitary confinement in pitch-dark or tiny cells. Use of noise, light, or sensory deprivation to break the psyche.Beating and Whipping: Blunt force beatings using fists, batons, cables, and hoses, Whipping the soles of the feet (falanga) was a common method causing extreme pain and long-term damage, Victims were often hung from ceilings and beaten for hours.
Sexual Abuse and Humiliation: Rape and sexual assault, including of both men and women, though often underreported. Forced nudity, particularly in front of others or during interrogations. Sexual threats used to extract confessions or humiliate.
Forced Confessions: Many prisoners were tortured into signing false confessions. Confessions were often used in sham trials or public propaganda.
Burning: Hot metal rods applied to the skin.
Death in Custody: Some prisoners were tortured to death, with families often receiving no explanation or receiving mutilated bodies.
Waterboarding
Nail/tooth extraction with pliers: Pulling out fingernails or toenails.
Teeth knocked out during beatings.
Beating with Cables: Prisoners were subjected to severe beatings using electric cables, often targeting the soles of the feet (a method known as bastinado).
Electric Shocks: Application of electric currents to sensitive parts of the body, including the genitals, to inflict intense pain. Devices were used to control voltage for prolonged torture.
Hanging by Limbs: Detainees were suspended by their wrists or ankles for extended periods, causing dislocation and extreme discomfort.
Mock Executions: Prisoners were led to believe they were about to be executed to instill fear and coerce confessions.
Sleep Deprivation: Detainees were prevented from sleeping for prolonged periods, leading to psychological distress.
Water Deprivation: Depriving detainees of water in the summer
Urination on Detainees
Chinese water torture: Victims were drenched with cold water, sometimes in winter, and left in freezing cells. Simulated drowning or being forced to ingest large amounts of water.
The Apollo: large, heavy, metal helmet covering up to the chest, is placed on the head, hands and feet were restrained by metal clamps. The metal helmet caused the prisoner's voice to be amplified when being whipped. In addition to whipping, electric shocks were given to sensitive parts of the body, including the prisoner's earlobe, lips, nose, and genitals, and then the shock was given. This destroyed the walls of the capillaries and cells, causing internal and renal bleeding, which subsequently caused blood to be excreted through the urine for several days after.
Crucifixion.
Barbed wire: wrapping barbed wire around body parts like the arm or leg
Burning with Cigarettes: Interrogators used lit cigarettes to burn the skin of prisoners, leaving lasting scars.
